Beijing On My Mind: The Long, Winding and Bumpy Road TO and FROM The UN Fourth World Conference on Women
On the 25th anniversary of the United Nations Fourth World Conference on Women and the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, Patricia Licuanan shares her Beijing story.
Patricia Licuanan is a social psychologist, educator and women’s rights and empowerment activist. She chaired the UN Commission on the Status of Women as the preparatory body for the UN Fourth World Conference on Women held in Beijing, China in 1995. At the conference, she chaired the main committee that negotiated the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. Post Beijing, she was involved in monitoring the implementation of the Platform for Action through her leadership in NGOs and networks in the Asia Pacific Region such as Asia Pacific Women’s Watch, Southeast Asia Women’s Watch and Women and Gender Institute. In the Philippines she has served as professor of Psychology at the Ateneo de Manila University, chair of the National Commission on the Role of Filipino Women, president of Miriam College, and Minister of Higher Education.
