Gloria “Yoya” Diño-Steele (College Class ’74, BA) Appointed as Acting Administrator of USAID

Yoya Diño-Steele, outstanding BA graduate of Class ’74 and Amazing Alumna Awardee, has been appointed as the Acting Administrator of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

Appointed by the new Biden Administration for this position, Yoya has a long and markedly successful record at USAID, the foremost international development agency. Having spent 40 years with USAID, Yoya carried significant responsibilities with the various USAID missions across the globe – in Africa, Eastern Europe, and Asia. She was the USAID Mission Director here in the Philippines from 2010-2015. In all her positions, Yoya brought dedication, passion, and commitment to development.

Yoya retired from her USAID post in 2020 and joined CARE USA, a well-known nonprofit organization as the Chief Operations Officer. She was asked by the Biden administration to assume this interim position at USAID to ensure continuity in the USAID program, while awaiting Congressional approval of Ms. Samantha Power, former US Representative to the United Nations. Responding to the call to serve the country, Yoya agreed to assume the position of Acting Administrator, a tribute to the deep confidence in her leadership.

In addition to bringing high standards of excellence to her work, Yoya was also known to share a warm heart and generous mentoring spirit with the people who worked with her.

Below is the Triple A citation for Yoya, describing her achievements during her long international career. We are also including the official announcement of her appointment, published in The Hill, a DC newspaper.

Miriam College is extremely proud of Yoya and wishes her continued success as she continues to share her wisdom. Our prayers and hopes are with her!
