In 1954, then Maryknoll President Miriam Thomas Thornton granted Ms. Gregoria Cayco permission to teach piano at the school which was then still located along Pennsylvania St. (now Leon Guinto) in Manila. From that initial offering, the school has expanded its music lessons in scope and size and today includes a variety of other musical instruments and voice instruction. Thus was born the Miriam College Music Center.
Today, the Music Center continually strives to be innovative in its programs by constantly updating and upgrading its facilities, services and course offerings that reflect the changing musical needs and persuasions of our esteemed students.
We are the only academic institution in the Philippines affiliated with the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM), a London – based leading authority on musical assessment which our selected students take every year to certify their international standing.

Programs and Services
Piano
Students will be taught keyboard proficiency and performance skills using varied repertoire from the classical genre. Integrated into the program is the Associated Board of the Royal School of Music (ABRSM London) Curriculum where technical abilities, sight-reading skills, and musicianship are examined every year for grade- level promotions.
Voice
Students will be taught proper breathing and vocal techniques to ensure good singing quality that befits their vocal range. Repertoire varies from Kundiman, to Classical, to Broadway and is an excellent course for people of all ages! ABRSM Voice Curriculum applies.
String
The strings program includes lessons in violin, cello, and guitar. Students will learn about the background of the instrument as well as traditional methods and techniques. As the student progresses to a higher level, they are integrated into the chamber music program where they learn not just the rudiments of playing with other musicians but to foster sensitivity and musicianship as well. ABRSM Curriculum in Strings applies.
Winds
The courses offered in the winds program are the flute and the saxophone. As with the other instruments, students are taught basic skills in note-reading and blowing techniques that will have them playing soulful melodies in no time!
Theory
Our Theory Program reinforces the individual lessons of each student enrolled. The Music and Movement class is designed for very young students in the pre-school age up to the early grade school years. Activities are centered on the learning of musical concepts through experience in dance, singing, and playing of rhythm and melodic instruments.
The older Theory students are confined in a classroom setting where they are taught the rudiments of music such as sight reading and solfeggio. ABRSM in Theory Curriculum applies.
Ensemble Class
We offer ensemble classes in Strings, Keyboard, Rock Band Playing, and Musical Theater for children and adults. These group classes strengthen an early appreciation for all kinds of music, from pop standards to classical, set in a less formal, less rigid training format. Technical and sound facilities for these classes conform to the latest industry standards.
Students who complete a year of study perform in a culminating activity at the end of each school year, held at the La Porte Hall of the Music Center. A concert venue that accommodates a seating capacity of 200 persons, the hall is acoustically sound thereby complementing the 2 full concert grand pianos housed in the theater.
