Welcome to
Miriam College Grade School
Miriam College Grade School (MCGS) is a second home to children from preschool to pre-adolescent age. It offers a 9-level educational program for the formative years, starting from early childhood (First Step, Nursery, and Kindergarten) to Grade 6.
The curriculum promotes active and meaningful learning to develop 21st century skills and competencies through a progressive educational philosophy, which is characterized by putting students at the center of the learning process and supported by a strong sense of community between students, teachers, and parents.
Lessons become more relevant as they are anchored on an environmental or societal context and linked to character and values formation. Through integration, students are able to find connections to real-world applications and develop empathy, compassion, and globally-responsive citizenship. By focusing on holistic and multidimensional development, the Grade School produces confident and happy learners.
Why Choose MC Grade School?
CONFIDENCE BUILDING
Grade School students are characterized as confident learners who are eager to discover and grow. This inherent confidence serves as a driving force for nurturing creativity as students develop competencies that contribute to their holistic growth in mind, heart, body, and spirit. By providing them with a strong foundation, the school aims to empower students to embrace challenges, think critically, express themselves creatively, and eventually become multidimensional and well-rounded children who can thrive as multidisciplinary citizens in high school and mindful catalysts in higher education.
A STRONG PRESCHOOL FOUNDATION
The Preschool programs at the Child Study Center of Miriam College Grade School offer early childhood education for children aged 3 to 5 years old. Our learner-centered curriculum for First Step, Nursery, and Kindergarten utilizes a thematic-integrated approach to teaching where children engage in a variety of developmentally appropriate activities that make them explore, investigate, discover, collaborate, create, and innovate. At the Preschool levels, we see children as true masters of wonder and imagination. These characteristics are what makes them natural creators, inventors, innovators, and problem-solvers. Our teaching-learning environment includes child-friendly learning areas, natural green spaces, and an extensive collection of age-appropriate materials unlike any other.
PROGRESSIVE EDUCATION
All levels in MCGS have transitioned to more progressive approaches that put students at the center of learning. The school’s own Project-Based Learning (PBL) framework, developed by our Vice-President for Academic Affairs and former Director for Basic Education, allows our students to become thinkers, movers, and doers. They experience connections across subject areas and create outputs that have a significant impact on the community. Integrated projects have replaced final quarterly examinations across levels, and students from Grades 4-6 pursue their interests and skills in weekly non-graded clubs. We have also developed our own programs to address the unique needs of our learners such as iStation, G.R.O.W. (Gather to Read, Observe, and Write), A.W.I.T. (Ating Wika, Ibigin at Tuklasin), Heal, Understand, Grow, and Smile (H.U.G.S.), Special Filipino-AP Classes, Student Activity Period, and more.
ALTERNATIVE LEARNING SPACES
There is so much room for learning and growing in the Miriam College campus. From our numerous Makerspaces, gardens, courts, and libraries to the Henry Sy Sr. Innovation Center (HSSIC), Science Garden, mini-forest, Environmental Studies Institute, Marian Auditorium and other venues, our alternative learning spaces are an integral part of our dynamic educational environment. Specialized areas such as the Tinker Lab and the provision of laboratories for Science, Music, Art, PE, HELE, and Computer provide appropriate spaces for exploration and creation.
HOME-SCHOOL COLLABORATION
The home plays an active role in our students’ growth and development which has gone beyond online distance learning and the pandemic. Strong partnership between the home and MCGS creates an environment that supports the overall well-being and growth of our students. The alignment of values and consistent parental support for classroom enrichment sessions, PBL outputs, outreach activities, workshops, and our Family Day and Fair, to name a few activities, is necessary for the formation of the child’s heart, mind, and body to the fullest.
21ST CENTURY SKILLS: COMMUNICATION, COLLABORATION, CRITICAL THINKING, AND CREATIVITY
Students hone the literacy skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing across and beyond the different academic offerings. We understand that language is purposeful and powerful, so students learn to communicate in meaningful contexts. We encourage students to speak their minds and discuss ideas in collaborative settings. Likewise, students engage in structured group work to achieve common goals or complete shared tasks, while thinking critically about the world around them. This approach encourages students to develop individual accountability, appreciate diverse perspectives, and exercise teamwork as they become planners, doers, and movers.
TO LOVE AND SERVE
We also give students opportunities to become leaders as class and club officers and through other special assignments. By giving students tasks, roles, and opportunities to lead, students can develop self-confidence, assertiveness, and the ability to make sound decisions. Even potential leaders undergo workshops and seminars to equip them with leadership skills. Class Presidents of Grades 4 to 6 comprise the Council of Leaders (COL) which is our version of student government, a primary group of students who represent and advocate for the interests and needs of the student body. They are tapped for leading school activities and programs, including Kapitbahay and Lingap Kapwa, our school’s outreach programs. These programs allow students to take collaborative action toward beneficiaries from Barangay Loyola Heights and with partner communities from beyond. Meaningful community involvement is also integrated in various forms of direct service, indirect service, and advocacy. Can you imagine going on a field trip and doing outreach at the same time? At MCGS, we do just that.
