Early Childhood Education + Postgraduate Degree Diploma in Adventure Education

The Bachelor of Early Childhood Education + Postgraduate Degree Diploma in Adventure Education (Ladderized program from Bachelor’s to PDD) is a four-year program. Specifically, this program provides students with fundamental understanding and application of the principles of early childhood care and education, as well as experience in the application of these principles. It progresses to an international qualification in Adventure Education with Camosun College of Victoria, Canada which will be validated as an integral part of the degree.

The Bachelor of Early Childhood Education + Postgraduate Degree Diploma in Adventure Education (ladderized program from Bachelor’s to PDD) aims to educate individuals to become competent early childhood practitioners working with children from 0–8 years old in various early childhood settings, including the home, community, school, and workplace. It provides a focus on designing safe and meaningful adventure experiences that connect children with natural landscapes, facilitate experiential learning, and engage them in outdoor activities that range from active and challenging to quiet and reflective. The program builds educators’ knowledge and competencies to engage in diverse applications of adventure education.

By the end of the program, graduates will be able to:

  • Demonstrate high level of content and pedagogical knowledge
  • Demonstrate appreciation for diversity, equality and inclusion
  • Manifest collaborative skills
  • Demonstrate innovative thinking
  • Possess critical and problem-solving skills
  • Advocate for children’s rights, equity, community, nationalism, and democratic ideas
  • Pursue lifelong learning
  • Identify and align the needs of participants with meaningful and effective adventure programming.
  • Apply a broad and coherent knowledge of foundational theories, concepts and practices in adventure program design.
  • Evaluate and adapt as practitioners in relation to intrapersonal and interpersonal dynamics.
  • Develop and implement ethical adventure programs with respect toward physical, social, environmental, emotional, and cultural aspects.
  • Lead and facilitate intentionally designed adventure programs in a safe and professional manner.

What Will I Study?

By the end of the program, graduates will be able to develop the following key competencies:

Child Development and Pedagogical Expertise
  • Apply foundational theories of early childhood development (0-8 years) across physical, cognitive, social, and emotional domains
  • Design developmentally appropriate learning experiences that integrate play-based approaches
  • Implement diverse pedagogical strategies responsive to individual children’s needs, interests, and abilities
  • Adapt teaching approaches for diverse learning contexts including indoor, outdoor, and adventure settings
Adventure Education Leadership
  • Facilitate safe, meaningful adventure experiences in both land-based and water-based environments
  • Apply group facilitation techniques that foster positive interpersonal dynamics
  • Design progressive adventure programs that balance challenge and support
  • Demonstrate technical outdoor skills necessary for leading adventure activities
Inclusive Educational Practice
  • Create learning environments that respect diversity, promote equality, and ensure inclusion
  • Identify and respond appropriately to the needs of children with diverse abilities
  • Implement differentiated instruction to accommodate various learning styles and developmental needs
  • Foster culturally responsive teaching approaches that honor diverse family backgrounds
Reflective and Ethical Professional Practice
  • Engage in ongoing critical reflection to improve professional practice

  • Conduct action research related to early childhood and adventure education
  • Apply critical thinking and problem-solving approaches to educational challenges

  • Contribute to the knowledge base in the fields of early childhood and adventure education

This dual awards program is jointly offered by Miriam College and Camosun College, Victoria British Columbia, Canada

Career Paths

Graduates of this program may venture on careers in a variety of sectors such as education, counseling, business or recreation in leadership or program design roles. The program is designed to prepare students for teaching and supporting young children’s development. It will prepare educators in bringing outdoor and adventure-based learning opportunities to those they serve in their distinct context/settings. A broad range of employment opportunities are available by fulfilling the degree requirements. Completion of the appropriate program will qualify graduates for employment in government or private institutions.
