“Nonviolence is not a garment to be put on and off at will. Its seat is in the heart, and it must be an inseparable part of our being.” – Mahatma Gandhi
On October 2, the Miriam College community and the Embassy of India, Manila held a joint celebration of Mahatma Gandhi’s 156th birth anniversary and UN International Day of Nonviolence. The occasion started with a flower offering at the bust of Mahatma Gandhi and was followed by remarks from H.E. Harsh Kumar Jain (Ambassador of India to the Philippines), Ms. Grace F. Favila (OIC President of Miriam College), and Dr. Gail R. Galang (Associate Director of the Center for Peace Education – Miriam College). Messages of commitment were delivered as well by student leaders, Sofia Martinez (President of OHDEA) and Katrina Omagap (President of Pax Christi Miriam College). Commemorative activities such as the inauguration of a photo exhibition and documentary viewing were also included in the program to highlight Gandhi’s life and legacy.
Through this annual celebration, our community continues to stand firm in building a culture of peace by embodying Gandhi’s principles of nonviolence.
