Through a donation drive spearheaded by its Library Media Center (LMC), Miriam College Grade School was able to sponsor books and training for schools or communities in South Luzon. Exceeding the initial goal of sponsoring three (3) public schools or communities, MCGS students were able to sponsor six (6) with a total donation of Php 124,410.00.
MCGS LMC, in partnership with Lakbay-Kuwentuhan, a book-giving caravan travelling to different Philippine provinces to donate books and provide training for teachers, students, and volunteers, started the donation drive last January 2023. The South Luzon Leg of the caravan started last February 1 in time for the World Read Aloud Day and ended on February 17 in time for the International Book Giving Day. Visiting 5 provinces in South Luzon, the amount raised for the caravan was used to buy 630 books for 4 elementary schools and 2 communities, and to provide training and storytelling sessions for 110 teachers and 224 students.
Through this partnership, teachers and reading advocates were empowered to begin their own reading programs. Teacher Kim Oraye, a teacher from Bololo Elementary School in Guinobatan, Albay, used the books donated by MCGS students to launch Isandaang Istorya, a 100-day storytelling program for their school.
Well done, MCGS!
