Through the Office of Institutional Partnerships and Resource Mobilization (OIPRM), the Department of International Studies welcomed the Global Citizenship Studies students of Seisen University last August 23, 2023. The 11 Japanese students took the opportunity to share their insights regarding common challenges confronting both the Philippines and Japan.
One of the groups delved into the operations of the Philippines’ Overseas Workers Welfare Administration, shedding light on the complexities of addressing the concerns of Filipino migrant workers. They highlighted issues such as brain drain, the predicament of families left behind by these workers, and the challenges faced by undocumented migrants.
Another group focused on gender-related issues in Japan, with a particular emphasis on domestic violence. They initiated a crucial dialogue about gender equality and explored how women and men can collaborate to promote it. It was noted, during an open forum, that gender issues concern not just women but also the participation of men in addressing them.
The final group shared their research findings on poverty in both Japan and the Philippines. Despite the economic prosperity in these nations, the high cost of living and insufficient minimum wage levels in Japan raised questions about the persistence of poverty in such affluent surroundings.
The session concluded with a lively dance-exercise routine performed by the Seisen University students, which the IS students eagerly joined.
Accompanying the Japanese students, Prof. Shun Ohno also showcased a brief video presentation about Seisen University, extending an invitation to all attendees to explore opportunities for visits or further studies at their institution.
