Miriam College Week was brought to life with a vibrant celebration that left a lasting impression on the International Studies Department. The spotlight shone on the Facilitation Skills and Techniques Workshop, a dynamic event led by esteemed professors from the International Studies (IS) department, Lorna Israel and Aaron James Garchitorena. This engaging workshop aimed to underscore the significance of acquiring facilitation skills while delving into the dos and don’ts of effective facilitation.
What set this workshop apart was its hands-on approach. Instead of a conventional lecture-style presentation, participants actively immersed themselves in various group activities. The workshop commenced with a unique and captivating exercise known as the “People Map.” Attendees were tasked with crafting a map reflecting their places of residence and collaborating with one another to achieve this goal. This interactive icebreaker exercise introduced participants to the concept of facilitation in a creative and distinctive manner, highlighting the role of effective facilitation in extracting information and nurturing connections within a group.
Following the People Map activity, attendees engaged in another interactive exercise where they were prompted to articulate their thoughts on “Why acquire facilitation skills?” Subsequently, volunteers were selected to share their responses with the group. This was succeeded by an additional activity, wherein participants were divided into two groups to compile a list of do’s and don’ts of facilitation. Through these immersive and enlightening activities, participants equipped themselves with invaluable skill sets that promise to enhance both their academic and professional journeys.
The Miriam College Week celebration provided a platform for the International Studies Department to showcase the importance of experiential learning and the acquisition of facilitation skills. Attendees left the event with a newfound appreciation for the power of effective facilitation in fostering collaboration, communication, and understanding within a group—a lesson they are sure to carry forward in their academic and professional endeavors.
