Last September 24, 2025, students from the COMM 107 class, accompanied by their professor Ms. Rechilda Ulili, visited the 37th Negros Trade Fair at the SM Aura SMX Convention Center in Taguig City. The off-campus activity aimed to immerse students in the rich culture, craftsmanship, and entrepreneurial spirit of Negros.
The event offered students an opportunity to engage directly with local vendors and artisans who showcased the heart of Negrense culture through their products. From delectable food delicacies to finely crafted handmade goods, each booth told a story of heritage, creativity, and community pride. Students explored a wide array of offerings — from flavorful specialties that delighted the senses to one-of-a-kind artisanal pieces that highlighted the region’s exceptional talent and resourcefulness.
Many vendors shared personal stories about their entrepreneurial journeys, the challenges they’ve faced, and the sustainable practices they embrace. They emphasized the use of locally sourced materials, showing how supporting small businesses can also mean supporting communities and the environment. These conversations made a strong impression, especially for students who are becoming more mindful about ethical consumption and the impact of their buying choices – supporting local businesses and appreciating the craftsmanship that goes into each product.
The visit proved to be both meaningful and memorable for the COMM 107 students. Beyond gaining valuable insights into real-world business operations, they developed a deeper appreciation for the diversity and richness of Filipino culture. Interacting directly with entrepreneurs gave them a deeper appreciation for the richness of Filipino culture, particularly that of Negros, and a better understanding of how theory connects with real-world business practices.
As the day wrapped up, students left not only with photos and souvenirs, but with inspiration — to support local, to value craftsmanship, and to keep learning beyond the classroom.
