Program Offerings for HEU Students

The Language Learning Center provides quality instructional services to both male and female, local and international, young and adult learners who wish to develop their proficiency in English and other foreign languages. Lessons and activities are designed for beginner to advanced learners to ensure maximum involvement in a virtual classroom. LLC also offers other services such as editing and translation services.

Content Area Literacy and Language (CALL)

Who may join the program: Incoming first year MC college students

Learning Outcomes:
At the end of this program, the learner will be able to:

  • read, understand, and respond to various texts in the content areas
  • communicate confidently both in oral and written English as they interact with varied audiences in different communicative settings

Program Duration: The Content Area Literacy and Language Program runs for 30 hours.

Academic Writing for Undergraduate Students (AWUS)

Who may join the program: Third year and fourth year MC college students

Learning Outcomes
At the end of this program, the learner will be able to:

  • formulate statement of research problem clearly which includes justifications for conducting the research, scope and limitations, and significance of the study 
  • select, cite, and synthesize related literature properly 
  • use sources according with ethical consideration and intellectual honesty
  • analyze theories to formulate the frameworks of the study 
  • describe research design, sample, and data collection and analysis procedures of the study; and
  • gather relevant information with ethical consideration and intellectual honesty  

Program Duration: Academic Writing for Undergraduate Students runs for 30 hours.

Academic Writing for Graduate Students (AWGS)

Who may join the program: Miriam College graduate students

Learning Outcomes:
At the end of this program, the learner will be able to:    

  • utilize standard academic English to create a well-written academic paper, keeping in mind suitability to audience and purpose. 
  • demonstrate understanding of the writing process which involves:
    • outlining, drafting, and rewriting stages
    • searching for and effectively integrating credible sources
    • observing academic honesty by acknowledging sources
    • following the prescribed structure and form of an academic paper. 

Program Duration: The Academic Writing for Graduate Students will run for 30 hours.

English as a Second Language (ESL) Program (for international students)

Who may join the program: Miriam College foreign college and graduate students

Learning Outcomes:
At the end of this program, the learner will be able to:

  • speak with better clarity, fluency, and accuracy
  • engage in social exchanges using the target language
  • write varied outputs which are suitable to purpose and audience
  • demonstrate accurate use of English language in speaking, listening, reading, and writing tasks

Program Duration: The English as a Second Language (ESL) Program runs for 30 hours.

Foreign Languages

Languages:

  • Mandarin
  • French
  • Nihongo
  • Spanish
  • Korean

Learning Outcomes
At the end of this program, the learner will be able to:

  • use the target language in various real-life settings
  • develop an appreciation for the target language
  • understand the culture of the country of the target language

Program Duration: The Foreign Language Program runs for 30 hours.

How to Apply

  • Fill out the Program Inquiry Sheet
  • Acknowledge the instructions for admission or enrollment sent by LLC via email.
  • Submit the necessary requirements via email.
  • Pay the testing fee and take the diagnostic test on the scheduled date (if applicable).
  • Confirm the proposed program schedule.
  • Pay the program fee.
  • Wait for the email regarding the program details.

Foreign Languages for Young Learners (FLYL) for Grades 4-5

Languages: Mandarin, French, Nihongo, Spanish

Learning Outcomes:
At the end of this program, the learner will be able to:

  • identify the letters of the alphabet of the target language
  • produce the correct sounds associated with each letter of the target language
  • say greetings and leave-takings 
  • introduce one’s self and one’s family
  • say one’s nationality 
  • count from 0-100
  • identify the days of the week
  • say one’s age

Program Duration:12 hours

Foreign Languages for Pre-teens (FLPT) for Grades 6-7
  • Languages: Mandarin, French, Nihongo, Spanish
  • Learning Outcomes:
    At the end of this program, the learner will be able to:
    • develop an awareness and appreciation for the target language
    • use basic expressions for communication in the target language
    • form basic sentences and questions
    • learn the culture of the target language
    • Program Duration: 20 hours
Foreign Languages (13 years old & above)

Languages:

  • Mandarin
  • French
  • Nihongo
  • Spanish
  • Korean

Learning Outcomes:
At the end of this program, the learner will be able to:

  • use the target language in various real-life settings
  • develop an appreciation for the target language
  • understand the culture of the country of the target language

Requirement: Miriam College students who are 13 years old and above

Program Duration: The Foreign Language Program runs for 30 hours.

English as a Second Language (ESL) Program (for International Students)

Requirement: Miriam College students who are 10-17 years old

Learning Outcomes
At the end of this program, the learner will be able to:

  • speak with better clarity, fluency, and accuracy
  • engage in social exchanges using the target language
  • write varied outputs which are suitable to purpose and audience
  • demonstrate accurate use of English language in speaking, listening, reading, and writing tasks

Program Duration: The ESL Program runs for 30 hours.
