Early Childhood Education

The Master of Education in Early Childhood Education is a professional graduate degree program that prepares students to be dynamic, empathic, and innovative teacher leaders. Students gain a deeper understanding of children (birth to 8) through research, reflection, theory, and pedagogy.

The graduates are prepared to be early childhood teacher leaders, specialists or      consultants, curriculum or      instructional designers, both in formal and informal settings, who will make impactful transformations in the field of early childhood education.

Program Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate strong content knowledge and skills in all areas of early childhood education.
  2. Design, implement, and evaluate relevant and meaningful curricula that promote inclusive developmental outcomes for every young child.    
  3. Support child development and learning through the use of developmentally appropriate teaching and assessment practices.
  4. Create environments that are beneficial, considerate, empathetic, and stimulating for each child.    
  5. Utilize research and reflective practices to innovate and enhance professional practice.
  6. Work toward continuing professional growth and development in the field to improve practice.

By the end of the program, graduates will be able to develop the following key competencies:

Strong Content Knowledge in Early Childhood Education

Demonstrating mastery of theories, principles, and current issues in early childhood education (ECE)    

Curriculum Design, Implementation, and Evaluation

Creating inclusive and developmentally appropriate curricula for children (birth to 8)    

Developmentally Appropriate Teaching and Assessment Practices

Applying pedagogical strategies suited for young learners, including child-centered and play-based methods    

Creating Nurturing and Stimulating Environments

Designing physical, social, and emotional learning environments that foster empathy, inclusivity, and child growth    

Research and Reflective Practice

Engaging in systematic inquiry to improve teaching and learning in ECE

Professional Growth and Leadership in ECE

Advocating for children’s rights, family engagement, and advancing the field of ECE    

These competencies can be assessed through a variety of methods, including the following:

1. Strong Content Knowledge in Early Childhood Education

  • Written comprehensive exams
  • Research-based essays or position papers
  • Oral presentations on ECE trends and issues
  • Case study analyses

2. Curriculum Design, Implementation, and Evaluation

  • Curriculum design projects (lesson plans, unit plans)
  • Peer review of designed curriculum
  • Practicum-based evaluation of implemented lessons
  • Rubric-based evaluation of a portfolio of instructional materials

3. Developmentally Appropriate Teaching and Assessment Practices

  • Demonstration teaching/microteaching sessions
  • Video analysis and reflection journals of teaching practice
  • Child observation reports and documentation of learning outcomes
  • Simulation of assessment tools for ECE learners

4. Creating Nurturing and Stimulating Environments

  • Classroom environment design projects (with floor plans or prototypes)
  • Observation checklists during practicum
  • Reflective journals on managing diverse learning environments
  • Peer and mentor evaluation of classroom management strategies

5. Research and Reflective Practice

  • Research proposal and final research project (special project requirement)
  • Action research reports conducted in practicum sites
  • Reflective practice journals linking theory to classroom experiences
  • Research colloquium presentations

6. Professional Growth and Leadership in ECE

  • Professional portfolio showcasing advocacy work and leadership initiatives
  • Participation in educational forums, conferences, or policy analysis projects
  • Peer evaluation of leadership and collaboration during group projects
  • Written reflection on continuing professional development goals

This program is implemented using a modular delivery mode.

The special project is practice-based where the student applies learned understandings, concepts, values, competencies, and skills on Special Education. Each student may choose to work on a project, or an action research related to the students’ field of specialization. All these with the guidance of a professor.

Potential Careers

Graduates of the MOE ECE program may work as    

  • Early Childhood Education Specialist / Consultant – advising schools, NGOs, or government agencies on curriculum, pedagogy, and assessment for young children
  • ECE Program Director / Administrator – managing preschools, kindergartens, daycare centers, or early intervention programs
  • Curriculum and Instructional Designer – creating developmentally appropriate learning materials and curricula for formal and informal settings
  • Teacher Leader / Mentor – leading professional development, coaching, and mentoring for teachers in ECE
  • Educational Researcher in ECE – conducting research and publishing work on early childhood learning, policy, and innovation
  • Policy Advocate / Education Program Officer – working with advocacy groups, foundations, or government to shape policies that support children’s rights and access to quality early education
  • University / College Faculty (ECE focus) – teaching and mentoring future teachers in higher education institutions
