Master of Education in Guidance and Counseling

Foundations of Guidance is designed to present an overview of the inter/transdisciplinary background of the field of Guidance and Counseling and the various activities in which the counselor participates. It will emphasize the various theoretical principles that guide the everyday efforts of the counselor, the concept of professionalism as well as the issues and trends in the field.

This course gives an overview and an in-depth study of the conceptual and application of the principles of counseling. It also focuses on the Western as well as theoretical approaches appropriate for the Filipino, an understanding of the counseling process, an application of the counseling skills and techniques to specific situations and a discussion on issues as well as the latest research in counseling psychology that may affect the counseling process.

An introductory course in Guidance. It provides a comprehensive overview of the field of Guidance for future guidance counselors and other human service workers. It is primarily anchored on the background knowledge and basic skills which are necessary for the later specialized courses in the master’s programs in Guidance.

Examines career development theories and decision-making models, career planning, career education, sources of educational and occupational information, nature and structure of the world of work and major issues that impact career choices.

Reviews the major theories of counseling as applied to group counseling with special emphasis on the stages of group development from formation to termination and follow-up. Course includes the development of facilitative skills and provides opportunities for supervised practice.
