Welcome to
Skills Development and Technical Education Center (sdtec)
Miriam College Skills Development and Technical Education Center (MC SDTEC) is a nurturing learning environment that offers inclusive, relevant and accessible education committed towards making a difference in the lives of underprivileged youth and adult learners.
MC SDTEC’s educational philosophy is grounded in the Maryknoll tradition of service, tracing its origins to 1967 when the Maryknoll Sisters established Miriam Adult Education (MAE) to extend formal and non-formal learning to underprivileged adults and youth with limited access to schooling. As the needs of its learner community grew and the scope of its programs expanded to include basic education alongside technical-vocational training, MAE was renamed Miriam College Skills Development and Technical Education Center — a name that more fully reflects the breadth and depth of its educational mission. This foundational commitment to equity and social transformation continues to strengthen MC SDTEC’s programs and practices. In 2026, MC-SDTEC joins Miriam College in celebrating its centennial — Learning, Leading, and Lighting the World — a milestone that reaffirms the enduring relevance of the Maryknoll mission and the MC SDTEC’s role in carrying it forward for the next generation of learners.
MC SDTEC currently offers a comprehensive range of educational pathways, including Junior High School, Senior High School, the Alternative Learning System (ALS), and Technical-Vocational Education and Training (TVET). These programs are structured to accommodate the diverse circumstances of its learner population, with class schedules from mid-morning through the evening. Evening classes further enable working students to pursue academic and technical qualifications without interruption to their livelihoods. Each pathway is designed to prepare learners for meaningful transitions — whether toward employment, entrepreneurship, middle-level skills development, or higher education.
Instruction at MC SDTEC is delivered primarily through face-to-face modalities across all program levels, supplemented by online learning where necessary to ensure continuity of education.
MC SDTEC’s overarching aim is to develop holistically formed graduates — equipped with the competencies, knowledge, and values necessary to participate meaningfully in society and contribute to their own advancement and that of their communities.

ALTERNATIVE LEARNING SYSTEM
The Alternative Learning System (ALS) is a flexible, non-formal education program that provides a practical alternative to conventional classroom-based instruction, enabling learners to complete basic education in a mode suited to their individual circumstances and needs.
MC SDTEC's ALS program is structured across three levels: Basic Literacy, Elementary, and Junior High School. Learners progress through three levels: Basic Literacy, Elementary, and Junior High School. Completers of each level who pass the Accreditation and Equivalency (A&E) Assessment earn a certificate equivalent to their corresponding grade level, allowing them to advance to the next. ALS Junior High School completers qualify to enroll in Senior High School. Throughout all levels, learners are guided by committed and trained teachers who provide the support each student needs to succeed.

My being deaf is not a barrier. I may be disabled because I cannot hear but I am definitely not handicapped because the environment where I was raised and where I am now allow me to function normally. My education with MAE paved the way to another opportunity. Finishing Bread and Pastry Production made me dream of having a deaf café in the future where I can hire deaf employees.

MAE was instrumental in achieving the skills that were necessary for me to properly do my work as a young teacher then. Not only did I learn the hard skills like typing and electricity, but more importantly I learned soft skills such as character, love of work, how to value time, respect and thanksgiving.
