Design

The Bachelor of Design program offers a four-year (4-yr.) generalized curriculum in design that focuses on practice-based paradigms for students to learn the introductory experiential learning in various forms of creativity in design and other related artistic disciplines, design-thinking processes, and honed technical skills for meritorious practice in design industries.  

The program strives to develop graduates who embody the principles of global citizenship with sincere emphasis on concerns of climate change, human inequality, respect for women, whilst promoting peace, justice, truth, and integrity of creation – the four core values that Miriam College would want to inculcate from the MC community. Through experience, observation, inquiry, and innovation, these global challenges in social, economic, and political viewpoints are manifested through students’ conceptualized ideas, creative outputs, and innovative designs, that mutually foster human dignity and human-centeredness altogether to create MC’s inclusive education and ethically-recognized spaces.     

Furthermore, the program is committed to building a culture of lifelong learning through culminating recitals, institutional projects, and self-initiated activities to fulfill their academic requirements. Graduates will be equipped with the skills and motivation to pursue continuing education opportunities, both within commercial enterprises and academic institutions. They will adapt to evolving industry trends and contribute meaningfully to their respective fields throughout their chosen design careers in the professional world.  

The Bachelor of Design is on Level II Recognition accredited by The Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges, and Universities, given May 30, 2025 until May 2030 for having satisfactorily met with the standards and fulfilled the requirements of the Association.

The Bachelor of Design is a unique and significant degree program in Miriam College that highlights the four focused design tracks namely: 1) Visual Communication Design; 2) Product Innovation Design; 3) Fashion and Clothing Design; and, 4) Private and Public Spaces Design.  

Visual Communication Design

Visual Communication Design includes preparations for strategic application of imagery, color, hue, and typography in convergence with information, education, and entertainment introduction frameworks for design structure for the body, heart, and mind.  

Product Innovation Design

Product Innovation Design covers preparations for technical application of innovative design process such as the incubation of ideation and conceptualization, prototyping, testing, refining, and manufacturing computer-aided design (CAD), render 2D or 3D models of physical objects with scientific analysis, simulation, evaluation, and modification. 

Fashion and Clothing Design
Fashion and Clothing Design applies the introductory nature of apparel and accessories with mixtures of usability, functionality, and sustainability where aesthetics are focused on the wise use of design elements, principles, and centrality. This also includes concept and research, choice of materials and fabrics, and, production of clothing, with range of casual, formal, and sustainable wear approaches. 
Private and Public Spaces Design

Private and Public Spaces Design significantly promotes the use of private (residential spaces, company office spaces, furniture installments) and public (decorative parks, leisure spaces, historical institutions) environments in accessible, connected, socially-engaged, secured, and, safe spaces modified to be functional, usable, and versatile in connection with property value and public engagement in relevance with shared history, culture and conservation.

By the end of the program, graduates will be able to develop the following key competencies:

These competencies can be assessed through a variety of methods, including:  

  • First-Year Students: computer-knowledge mastery; creative skills; communication mastery; the value outcomes of patience; diligence; respect for history 
  • Second-Year Students: critical skills; technical mastery in rendering and design; reflective thinking skills; the value outcomes of cooperation; trust, selflessness 
  • Third-Year Students: Observation mastery; strategic planning mastery; the value outcomes of teamwork; discipline; dedication to craftsmanship;  
  • Fourth-Year Students: problem-solving skills, leadership skills; collaborative skills; decision making; the value outcomes of mastery of self-concept, self-care, and empathy 

What will I study?

Aligned with CHED Outcomes-Based Framework and Philippine Qualifications Level 6, graduates under the Bachelor of Design are expected to:  

  1. Recognizethe elements, principles and properties in design and those design theories and practices relevant to and in application with global, societal, and individual needs; 
  2. Interpretappropriateand contextualized ethical standards, policies, and, processes in accordance with the design profession including intellectual property rights (IPR) on copyright (artistic and literary works), trademark (brand identity), patency (inventions), and trade secrets (confidential information);   
  3. Usethe creative and critical thinking skills to elaborate design ideas and concepts attuned to the needs of the human community with accessibility of information, functionality, and comfort through generative design plans and solutions; 
  4. Devisepre-production, production, and post-production leadership, planning, resources, operations, and performance evaluation through design timeline and activity schedules; 
  5. Planinterdisciplinary,multidisciplinary and cross-disciplinary professional collaboration and cooperation between and among local and international creative design communities and its arts-related courses and programs;  
  6. Designcreative design outcomessignificantly-relevant to versatile spatial components such as physical, digital, and immersive platforms using instruments and tools, techniques and styles, and, technological and digital media;  
  7. Developcreative design outcomeswith strong sense and engagement to global citizenship which focuses on strengthening promotion of climate change, equality, anti-discrimination among other relevant SDGs (sustainable development goals) of the United Nations;   
  8. Innovatecreative design outcomes through professional development and lifelong pedagogies with flexible mindset on diversity, social and technological change,and, anthropological infrastructures;    
  9. Integratesocial, cultural,creative and critical insights in design-produced works in relation to ideation, production, and distribution to the field of arts, culture, and business; and,    
  10. Communicateeffectively and efficiently in creative design outcomes through verbal, non-verbal, written, and audio-visual recordingto captured audiences, community stakeholders, and the design profession.  

Total Program Units: 161 units

General Education, Institutional Courses, and Electives: 71 units

Major Courses: 90 units

Standard Completion Time: 4 years
