Curriculum and Teaching with Specialization in 21st Century Learning

The Master of Education in Curriculum and Teaching with specialization in 21st-Century Learning (MOE CAT) program is a graduate-level degree that focuses on teaching practices to prepare teachers for the fast-changing needs of tomorrow’s learners.  

This program challenges education professionals to reexamine theories, structures, and practices in curriculum and instruction to plan and provide learning opportunities fit for a fast-paced, competitive, technology-driven society.  

The program culminates in a capstone project that focuses on 21st–century principles applied in the student’s field of practice.

Program Outcomes

By the end of the program, graduates will be able to:

  1. think critically and creatively to develop solutions to educational problems, innovative solutions, and create new forms of knowledge.
  2. provide transformative leadership in any educational context.
  3. communicate new ideas and solutions to different problems effectively.
  4. collaborate with researchers, educational leaders and institutions, government agencies, and other stakeholders in upholding educational equity and quality.
  5. possess a strong theoretical and practical knowledge on curriculum design, development, and evaluation.
  6. interpret and develop instructional designs and models related to various fields and areas in education.
  7. contribute to the development of an education system that is appropriate and relevant to the needs and context of the learners.
  8. develop leadership skills in managing schools, projects, advocacies, and programs.

By the end of the program, graduates will be able to develop the following key competencies:

Global Literacy and Awareness

Understanding of emerging global literacies and their implications to education 

Technology Integration

Competence in using and innovating with emerging classroom technologies. 

Diversity and Inclusion

Sensitivity to learner diversity and ability to foster collaborative learning environments    

Curriculum and Instructional Design

Strong foundation in designing, developing, and evaluating curricula in various learning environments  

Instructional Model Application

Understanding and application of instructional designs suited for 21st- century education  

Critical and Creative Problem Solving

Ability to think critically and creatively in addressing educational challenges  

Leadership and Communication

Skills in leading educational initiatives and communicating ideas effectively  

Research and Reflective Practice

Capacity to conduct research and reflect on practice to improve teaching and learning  

 

These competencies can be assessed through a variety of methods, including the following:

1. Curriculum and Instructional Design

a. Curriculum design projects and instructional blueprints

b. Peer-reviewed lesson plans and unit plans

c. Rubric-based evaluation of instructional models

2. 21st-Century Pedagogical Strategies 

a. Demonstration teaching using ICT-based tools 

b. Simulation of problem-based and project-based learning 

c. Reflective journals on pedagogical approaches 

3. Educational Advocacy and Leadership 

a. Development and presentation of advocacy campaigns 

b. Case studies on educational leadership and reform 

c. Written reflections on leadership and advocacy experiences 

4. Research and Reflective Practice 

a. Research proposal and capstone project 

b. Action research reports in field settings 

c. Reflective journals linking theory to practice 

5. Learning Environment Design 

a. Evaluation of physical and virtual learning environments 

b. Peer and mentor feedback on classroom design 

c. Portfolio of learning environment innovations 

This program is implemented using a modular delivery mode and qualifies students to take the Licensure Examination for Teachers

Total Program Units: 40 units

Course Work: 34 units
Capstone Project: 6 units
Comprehensive Exam

Standard Completion Time: 14 months

The Special Project is practice-based and is accomplished as you take the different specialization courses. You are assigned to a mentor and an adviser (content and process specialists) who will closely supervise the process of project-making and writing of the paper.

Students who are not currently teaching will be immersed in partner schools.
