Professional Teaching
The Certificate in Professional Teaching (CPT) is an 18-unit program that aims to equip non-education degree holders with the necessary pedagogical knowledge and skills to become licensed teachers. Students are provided with a fundamental understanding of learning principles, curriculum development, assessment strategies, and classroom management techniques. Completers are expected to be prepared to take and pass the Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET).
Program Goals
The goal of the Certificate in Professional Teaching program is to ensure graduates are adequately prepared to pass the Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET) and become licensed professional teachers.
Program Outcomes
In line with the provisions of RA 7836 (The Philippine Teachers Professionalization Act of 1994), the program aims to provide non-education degree holders with:
- an understanding of the cognitive, socio-emotional, and physical characteristics of children or adolescents and how they develop and learn;
- knowledge of subjects they teach and how to teach those subjects to students;
- skills for managing and monitoring student learning; and
- a reflective attitude about their practice and an openness to adapt their teaching to new findings, ideas, and theories.
Key Competencies Developed:
By the end of the program, completers will be able to develop the following key competencies:
- Understanding of child or adolescent development: cognitive, socio-emotional, and physical characteristics of learners and how they develop and learn;
- Foundational knowledge and pedagogical skills: knowing core educational principles and the ability to effectively convey learning to students;
- Curriculum design and implementation: understanding curriculum models, principles, and approaches for designing, delivering, and assessing learning experiences;
- Assessment and evaluation: designing and implementing various assessment tools, interpreting results, and using data to improve teaching and learning;
- Classroom management and learning environment: creating a positive and effective learning environment, managing student behavior, and fostering a supportive classroom culture;
- Reflection and professional growth: reflective attitude towards teaching, prompting graduates to analyze their practice, identify areas for improvement, and adapt to new findings and technologies in education.
These competencies can be assessed through a variety of methods, including the following:
- Understanding of Child or Adolescent Development: Case Study Analysis, Observation Reports, Developmental Milestone Chart;
- Foundational Knowledge and Pedagogical Skills: Mastery Quiz or Exam, Lesson Plan Analysis, Lesson Plan Design, Concept Mapping of Educational Theories to Appropriate Teaching Strategies;
- Curriculum Design and Implementation: Curriculum Mapping Project, Instructional Materials Portfolio, Peer Review of Unit Plans;
- Assessment and Evaluation: Assessment Tool Design, Data Interpretation Exercise, Reflective Journal;
- Classroom Management and Learning Environment: Simulated Classroom Scenarios, Classroom Environment Design Project, Management Plan; and
- Reflection and Professional Growth: Teaching Portfolio, Self-Assessment, Action Research Proposal
Potential Careers
The CPT program is designed to prepare students for the licensure examination for teachers for a career in teaching and supporting learners’ development. A broad range of employment opportunities is available by fulfilling the requirements and obtaining a teaching license. Completion of the program will qualify graduates for employment in government or private educational institutions.
