50 years ago, Philippine President Ferdinand E. Marcos, declared Proclamation No. 1081 on September 23, 1972, placing the Philippines under “Martial Law”. Marcos’ dictatorship was marked as one of the darkest moments in Philippine history due to the arrests, forced disappearances, torture, abuse of power, blase disregard for human rights, and systematic theft. Even with the success of the EDSA revolution, why is it crucial to choose not to forget?

To forget our history is to forget the sufferings our fellow Filipinos have experienced. As part of the Miriam College Week Celebration, the MC Committee on Engaged Citizenship, the Departments of International Studies and Social Sciences, and the Women and Gender Institute commemorated the Filipino struggle against Martial Law through a webinar entitled: “Light Shines Brightest in the Darkest of Times: Inspiring Stories of Resistance Against Martial Law” on September 7, 2022 (Wednesday) from 10:00 AM to 12:00 NN via zoom and the Innovation Center. The forum aims to (1) observe the 50 years of Martial Law and its impact in our history, (2) reflect on the lessons of this dark period in history and listen to the inspiring stories of those who fought and resisted against it, and (3) critically discuss and evaluate the current attempts to change the historical narrative on the Martial Law years.

With their persuasive passion, the speakers have touched the hearts and minds of the audience as the truth was able to be discussed throughout the webinar. The forum ended with hope and bravery as they imparted us with the words “Ang namulat, ?di na muling mapipikit,” because to turn a blind eye means we allow such injustices to prevail. Let us bring pieces of truth, justice, and freedom in every aspect of our lives so we can convey these values to the people we meet.
