January is officially recognized as Zero Waste Month under Presidential Proclamation No. 760, a time to promote critical environmental awareness and action among Filipinos.
Yet, the urgent question remains: What is actually happening now?
The Philippines continues to be a top global waste generator, grappling with persistent waste management challenges.
At Miriam College, we believe acknowledgment must lead to action, and a single month is not enough. That is why the Miriam College Environmental Studies Institute (ESI) champions a shift from a Zero Waste Month to a Zero Waste Lifestyle for our entire community.
Our commitment extends beyond awareness. Since last year, we have taken concrete steps:
• Engaging our frontline staff through specialized training for janitorial and facilities personnel on responsible waste management.
• Implementing systemic monitoring of office carbon emissions to measure and reduce our institutional footprint.
• Driving community-wide action through initiatives like Climate Action Week and the efficient operation of our campus Materials Recovery Facility (MRF).
These efforts are designed to move the MC community from passive observers to active, informed participants in building a sustainable future. The journey to zero waste is continuous, and every action counts.
Join us in making the Zero Waste Lifestyle our everyday commitment.
