Work-Bike Balance: Sustainability From One Pedal To Another
Like many commuters in Metro Manila, much of my travel time is spent in traffic. What could have been short commutes around the city often became exhausting and difficult journeys. Looking for a better alternative, I turned to cycling. However, this mode of transportation was never easy, as I have endured unforgiving heat, heavy rains, road obstructions, and near traffic collisions. So, what keeps me coming back to the bike despite everything?
Over the years, I realized that cycling has become more than just an alternative solution to traffic congestion. It is an integral part of my life that reminds me I can choose a simpler, healthier, and more sustainable way of moving forward.
A decade and roughly 15,000 kilometers later, cycling has helped me meet new friends, reduce commuting expenses, shorten travel time, join LGU ride campaigns, and connect with people from different walks of life. It has served as a real-world classroom where I learned to follow traffic rules and has fostered respect for pedestrians and fellow commuters. More than just a mode of transport, it has built the patience, discipline, resilience, physical, and mental health needed — all while practicing sustainability every day.
So when you see me or other people commuting on foot or on two wheels, I hope you see more than just a commuter navigating traffic. I hope you see a community of people actively choosing healthier, more patient, and sustainable ways forward. Ultimately, the road belongs to all of us and by sharing it with respect we can ride toward a better common good.
