The Miriam College Center for Peace Education (MC-CPE) actively promotes peace and human security by empowering women and youth to care for both their communities and the environment. In partnership with the Global Network of Women Peacebuilders (GNWP), MC-CPE organized two impactful activities in Pikit, North Cotabato, within the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (BARMM). These activities included a day-long seminar focused on Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) through Climate Action, followed by a practical tree-planting event aimed at encouraging tangible climate action among local participants.
The seminar, held on May 24, 2025, brought together 58 participants from various sectors, including schoolteachers, student leaders, and local government officials. Led by Bianca Reyes and Mei Lamorena from MC-CPE and the Environmental Studies Institute respectively, the training increased awareness of environmental challenges and highlighted the vital role women can play in peacebuilding and environmental stewardship. Participants expressed a strengthened understanding of climate issues and committed to taking at least one actionable step toward fostering peace and environmental security within their communities.
Following the seminar, a tree-planting activity took place over two days—initially along a roadside in Barangay Balong and later within the grounds of a local Madrasah. A total of 100 trees, mostly hardwoods, were planted with active participation from students, teachers, and community members. These efforts serve as immediate and practical climate actions that reinforce the seminar’s goals, fostering community resilience and environmental care while inspiring ongoing commitment to peacebuilding and climate advocacy.
