Access to safe and affordable drinking water is a fundamental human right and a core target of SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation. At Miriam College, we believe that true access extends beyond availability—it must be rooted in safety and sustainability. Our campus-wide drinking water initiative demonstrates a systematic, institutional model for achieving Target 6.1.
Our Commitment: Available, Accessible, and Safe
Our network of 38 drinking fountains across campus provides free, accessible water to all students, employees, and visitors. This ensures the “available and affordable” component of the goal is met for our community, eliminating economic barriers to hydration.
Our core contribution lies in our proactive safety protocol, which ensures the water is not just accessible, but reliably safe:
- Quarterly Potability Testing: Water samples are analyzed by a DOH-accredited laboratory to verify compliance with national safety standards.
- Monthly Professional Maintenance: Scheduled servicing by our partner to ensures all fountains function optimally and hygienically.
- Systematic Sanitization: Regular cleaning protocols prevent contamination and protect public health.
This multi-layered approach transforms a basic service into a demonstrable institutional commitment to health and well-being. This institutional practice protects health, builds trust, and champions a culture of sustainability.
