Academic Leadership
MARILU RAŇOSA–MADRUNIO, PhD
Dean, Higher Education Unit
August 2026 — Present
Dr. Madrunio is the pioneer of forensic linguistics in the country and is the founding president of the Philippine Association for Forensic and Legal Linguistics (PAFLL). She has a PhD in Applied Linguistics from De La Salle University – Manila and a post-graduate diploma from the SEAMEO Regional Language Center in Singapore. She is the first Filipino recipient of the EFL Foreign Educators Program at Georgetown University, Washington DC awarded by the US State Department in 2010.
As an applied linguist, she has represented the country in various academic fora in the US, Greece, Singapore, Brunei, South Korea, and China. She is a past president of the Philippine Association for Language Teaching (PALT) and the Linguistic Society of the Philippines (LSP) and is currently a member of its Board of Advisers. She is also a member of several international advisory boards and a reviewer of Scopus-indexed journals such as 3L – Language, Linguistics, and Literature: The Southeast Asian Journal of English Language Studies, Asian Englishes, and Computers and Composition, among others.
At present, she is the Chair of the Technical Panel for Foreign Languages at the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), the Section Chair of Anthropology and Linguistics, Division VIII of DOST – National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP), a member of the Board of Trustees and the Chair of the Training Committee of the Foundation for Upgrading the Standard of Education (FUSE), and a regular speaker at the Philippine Judicial Academy (PHILJA), the training arm of the Supreme Court of the Philippines.
Dr. Madrunio was a full professor in the Department of English at the University of Santo Tomas – Manila where she served in various capacities – as Dean of the UST Graduate School, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Letters, Chair of the Department of Languages, Founding Chair of the Department of English, and the Founding Editor of the Asian Journal of English Language Studies (AJELS), the official journal of the UST Department of English. She has served UST for 38.5 years and retired early in July 2026.
In the field of forensic linguistics, her research interests include courtroom discourse, crisis negotiation, hate speech, and threatening communication.
Ryan M. Noleal, LPT, MAEd, MLST
Associate Dean for Academic Quality and Faculty Affairs
Prior to his appointment as Associate Dean, he served as Curriculum Specialist in the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Program Manager of the Lifelong Education and Development (LEAD) Center of Miriam College. Before joining Miriam College, he spent over a decade as a Science and Mathematics teacher before assuming academic leadership roles at FIRST Industrial Science and Technology College, Inc. (FIRST College), where he served as Head of the Academic Affairs Department and later as School Head from 2022 to 2024. He is also a member of the Curriculum Development Team responsible for the development of the Bachelor of Elementary Education under the national initiative on Reframing the Pre-service Teacher Education Curriculum in the Philippines.
His professional interests include learning design, teacher education, science education, curriculum development, educational documentation, and program evaluation. He earned his Master of Learning Sciences and Technology from the University of Sydney as an Australia Awards Scholar and holds both a Master of Arts in Education (Curriculum Studies) and a Bachelor of Elementary Education (Science and Health) from the University of the Philippines Diliman. A licensed professional teacher, he placed 10th in the 2006 Licensure Examination for Teachers (Elementary Level). In 2024, he was awarded a second Australia Awards Scholarship to complete the Skills Forecasting for the Fourth Industrial Revolution Short Course at Griffith University in Australia.
Associate Dean for Student ExperienceÂ
Prior to her appointment as Associate Dean, she served as Chair of the Curriculum and Teaching program at Miriam College. She brings more than three decades of experience in teaching, school administration, educational leadership, and student development across both Philippine and international educational settings. She began her teaching career at Ateneo Grade School in 1994 and later served in various academic and leadership positions, including as an Early Childhood Education teacher at Bangkok Patana School in Thailand, one of Southeast Asia’s leading international schools. She also served as Integrated School Principal of the Basic Education Unit of PAREF Woodrose School, where she provided leadership in curriculum implementation, faculty development, and student formation.
Her professional work has consistently focused on student-centered learning, holistic development, and educational excellence. She earned both her Doctor of Education in Curriculum and Teaching and her Master of Arts in Education from Miriam College, where her scholarship and leadership continue to inform her commitment to advancing quality education and enriching the student experience.
