Last July 21-23, 2022, the Miriam College Department of International Studies organized a roundtable discussion entitled: “Neoliberalism and Feminism: Anti-feminist or post-feminist?” At the International Conference on Remapping the Feminist Global: A Multi-vocal, multi-located conversation in South Korea (Hybrid). The conference was organized by Ewha Woman’s University (South Korea), Massey University (New Zealand), Australian National University, and Göteborg University (Sweden).
The RTD seeks to critically engage with neoliberalism’s entanglement with feminist ideas and ideals. The panelists composed of Prof. Lorna Israel and Dr. Mel Reyes of the MC IS Department, Atty. Archill Capistrano of UP Cebu, Dr. Jean Franco of UP Diliman, and two MCIS alumni Ms. Stefani Velasco and Mr. Vince Sabellon provided their insights and posed questions on what feminism can learn/unlearn from neoliberalism’s discursive packaging of empowerment and gender equality; the implication of post-feminism to women and men hailed by neoliberal as ‘empowered’ subjects, and the issue of post-feminism as an anti-feminist phenomenon, particularly in Asia where neoliberalism prevails besides issues of disempowerment or inequality.
